Neuro-muscular scoliosis

A group of conditions present with a similar pattern of Spinal Deformity. The muscles are unable to support the weight of the trunk. If conservative measures are ineffective, surgical fusion is considered.

Goals of the operation are to achieve truncal alignment in the upright position and fusion to prevent progression.

The treatment options are discussed with the patient or usually the family and / or carers. These range from modifying the wheel chairs, through to well moulded corsets, sleep systems and aggressive therapies.

The aim of surgery, when suitable, would be to improve the quality of life, assist in rebilitation and prevent secondary problems such as costo-pelvic impingement, pressure sores, reflux and chest problems. Surgery comprises of fusion of the spine.
