Disc prolapse

This is one of the commonest conditions in the young active individual that requires attention. Though most of these resolve with rest and other non-surgical treatments, there are some situations when surgery may be required.

Non surgical options include rest, activity modification, supervised physiotherapy, exercise programme and injections such as nerve root block and caudal epidural injections.

Micro-discectomy may be required for severe pain and nerve related problems. Cauda Equina syndrome is a surgical emergency where a large disc prolapse causes nerve compression that leads to loss of sphincter control.
